Objectives for Temporary Winter Night Shelter
To provide supervised overnight accommodation to homeless and vulnerable people who would otherwise be rough sleeping on the streets of Eastbourne, during the extreme winter months (December –February inclusive.)
We aim to provide a warm, safe and friendly environment between the hours of 7.00pm (doors open) and 8.00am (guests depart) This will involve mealtimes at evening and breakfast and a period of inter-acting with the guests during the evening. We expect to engage in a variety of activities, including games, dvds, quiz’s, singing and discussions. You may have a suggestion/idea to offer here…
All guests wishing to access the WNS for the first time are required to come through our Registration Process. Potential guests can be referred to us via the council, probabtion and oher agencies including Matthew 25 Mission, the Salvation Army, Fatfleshed Ministries, Foodbank and others. To access the WNS guests are invited to attend a short interview with the WNS referral team, Monday – Friday, 1pm – 3pm at Christ Church, Seaside, Eastbourne BN22 7NN. Specific interview times can be arranged by the referring agencies during these times on behalf of guests, or directly by guests, by calling the WNS telephone: 07932 407730.
For more details, including information for weekends, see the section on our Frequently Asked Questions page here.
Volunteers are invited from all Churches in the Eastbourne area, however, you may wish to organize a team from your own Church and provide your own continuity for a regular night etc. The Shelter will operate three shifts per night – Evening shift, (6:30pm-10:30pm) Night shift (10:30pm-7:15am) and Morning shift (7:15am-8:45am)
We require people with a willingness to serve in any capacity, i.e., catering, setting up, befriending, cleaning up in the morning, and volunteers willing to sleep overnight (2 per night)
We sincerely hope you will consider having an involvement with this much needed Ministry at whatever role and frequency you can, and we thank you for taking the time to read these notes.
